De Niro’s advice.

by Gianpiero Cognoli

At the Rome Cinema Fest 2006, Robert DeNiro stopped by to say hi, and to present a few minutes of his film "Title" with which he debuted as a director for the first time. We at FILMART were curious to know what kind of advice an actor of his experience and calibre would give to young artists.

FILMART: Can you give us a piece of advice for young actors and one for young directors?

DeNiro: Well, for actors, you have to keep doing, basically, doing it because you really love to do it, and then... whether you make a living at it is another thing. Hopefully, you can do both. For directing, though, this project was really hard to do and if it wasn't for a lot of the actors not getting what they usually would get and everybody putting investment for as little as they were... everybody made a sacrifice to get the thing done. Uh, I don't know how it could've been done otherwise.

I spoke, I was just doing an interview before I was talking, I had a thing I gave to Elia Kazan about, uh, twenty years ago and I asked him to look at something I thought, he said, do it now, because you have the strength to do it. When you're older it's harder. He was 65 years old with The Last Tycoon. It stuck with me, it's a lot of work, directing a movie, so you might as well try to make it as good as you can. Everybody coming at you... it's relentless. And another thing, I still don't, I still can't believe the movie is made.
